What AIFi actually looks like

Agentic finance breaks into two halves, and Coinbase's framing is useful.

1. Agentic trading — software that monitors and manages value on your behalf.

Imagine a portfolio that rebalances itself. You connect an MCP, describe the objective, set guardrails, and the agent watches for conditions, then acts only when they're met. The point isn't that AI can tell you about your money. It's that, inside clearly defined permissions, AI can do something with it.

2. Agentic commerce — software paying software in real time.

A marketing agent notices it needs a new dataset mid-campaign. Instead of stopping to ask a human to pull out a credit card, it finds a provider, pays a few cents through x402, receives the data, and keeps working.

That second one is the real step-change, because it turns a payment into part of the request itself.

The economics shift: pay per request, not per seat

Subscriptions made sense when a human sat at a desk all month. An agent doesn't work that way.
